They never say what he is in the show, exactly. My vote's either for a physicist or an engineer. He could be an computer engineer- it would explain why he's doing mainly computer stuff in Midway and Enemy at the Gate, apparently had enough skills in coding to be suspected of editing Atlantis' OS in Critical Mass, and was working on solving the Jumper problem in 38 Minutes. I tend to lean towards the physicist with, say, a master's in electrical engineering, personally; that way, he has the computer skills necessary, but also the maximum potential to be in situations that might not endear him to McKay.
While he seems to know astrophysics and probably has a degree of some sort in it, he seems like more of a computer engineer to me because when it comes to figuring out the Ancient technologies McKay is usually on top of it and leaves the more technical computer stuff to him.
Sounds about right :) I'm so lame that I wanted this info for one line in the fic that has no other implications, its just kind of throwaway... i'm anal retentive that way...
