A/N: Was just cleaning out my computer files and found this, there was one line of a next scene but God knows where it was going, so I'm leaving it as a drabble.
Daniel was sitting in his office sifting through various mission files from his year ‘away’. He flipped one open regarding a trip SG1 had taken back to Kelowna, eyes not taking in any of the words. He couldn’t concentrate and sighed as his thoughts drifted.
It wasn’t anything he could put his finger on. Nothing particularly specific of definable. But something had definitely changed. He could feel it.
Admittedly his memories were still a little sketchy and there were still a few things he couldn’t remember from before he ascended but it was basically all there. He remembered his childhood, the death of his parents, studying at college, joining the Stargate programme, Sarah, Sha’re, and SG1; how they were more of a family than just team-mates or friends.
He remembered Jack and how he always looked out for him. He remembered how they argued and bickered. He remembered how Jack was the older brother, or even just close friend, he had never had.
He remembered how Jack used to purposely wind him up, pretending he didn’t understand. The humorous glint in his eyes whenever they came across a particularly cliché culture offworld.
And it was a good thing he remembered it, because it certainly wasn’t there now.
Their team missions were methodical, precise and sometimes non-existent with the increasing number of solo projects they were each undertaking. The sarcastic comments and seemingly light-hearted (or not) mocking was still there, but Jack’s heart didn’t seem to be in it anymore. He just seemed to be going through the motions.
The most frustrating thing was that Daniel had this niggling feeling he should know what the cause was, why Jack had changed. And what was even more frustrating was that he probably did know what the cause was, he just couldn’t remember.
Sighing deeply, he closed the file and heaved himself out of the chair, there was no way he’d be able to concentrate on those mission reports tonight.
